Rito Yuuki is the main male protagonist of To Love-Ru. He is an ordinary brown-haired 16-year-old student at Sainan High, deeply infatuated with Haruna Sairenji. Despite his numerous attempts to confess his feelings to her, he has always failed. In junior high, Rito was on the soccer team and quite skilled, but he quit because he often helped his father with manga work, not wanting to leave his younger sister Mikan Yuuki alone at home. Mikan notes that he excels at seemingly trivial things like crane games and festival games (e.g., hoops, catching fish, squirt guns). Besides these "useless little things," Rito is also talented as a florist, gardener, and horticulturalist.
Rito's nature is somewhat clumsy, frequently ending up ogling or accidentally groping the many girls in the series. By chance, he encounters Lala, who initially pretends to have affectionate feelings for him. Despite his ongoing crush on Haruna, Rito starts developing deeper feelings for Lala. His confusion about whether this constitutes love is highlighted when he can't stop thinking about Lala even while with a naked Haruna. It is later revealed that he loves both Lala and Haruna. At the end of the series, he confesses his love to Lala but admits his feelings for Haruna as well. Lala, happy about his feelings, tells him that once he becomes king of the universe, Earth's laws no longer apply, prompting him to go tell Haruna. Before he can confess to her, she moves out of the way, just like before, leading him to declare "I love you" to all the female characters except Momo, Mikan, Golden Darkness, and Haruna. The ending suggests his romantic troubles will continue.

Riko is Rito's female alter-ego, a beautiful girl resembling a tomboy who attracts attention from men, including Principal Taizou Motemitsu and Kenichi Saruyama, Rito's best friend. Later, Saruyama falls for "Riko-chan" and asks Lala to arrange a date. Out of pity, Lala forces Rito to transform into "Riko" so Saruyama can go on a date with her. After this, Riko appears only occasionally.
