Haruna Sairenji is the secondary female lead in To Love Ru and one of Rito's classmates, as well as someone he has feelings for. Haruna shares these sentiments, having been drawn to his kind and gentle nature since their junior high days. Despite her deepening affection for Rito, which she assumes is unreciprocated, she generally keeps her emotions in check and finds it difficult to confess due to her friendship with Lala, who also harbors feelings for Rito. However, after some encouragement, she confides in Lala about her situation. Lala accepts this, acknowledging Haruna as a rival for Rito's affections while maintaining their friendship. Haruna resides in an apartment with her older sister Akiho and has an intense fear of ghosts and supernatural phenomena, with the exception of Oshizu Murasame, but only to a certain degree.
When scared, she tends to grab whatever is closest to her—usually Rito—and swing him around wildly in an effort to ward off whatever frightens her. There is a recurring joke where Rito is on the verge of confessing to her, only to have something (or someone) interrupt them. She lives in an apartment with her elder sister.
Highly responsible, Haruna's character often wins over her classmates' hearts, leading them to vote her as class representative even when she did not run for the position. She is part of the tennis club and is left-handed.
