Ren Kosaka is actually Kai's real father, who died from a gunshot. Kai witnessed the shooting of his father, Ren, which was supposedly carried out by Hal's father, but it was really a man standing nearby. Ren was a member of NARC and was in charge of the "switch" case. Following his death, the case was completely closed, and all evidence related to the drug operation vanished. The documents were burned, and everyone connected to the case had met their end.
