Remilia is the proprietor and head of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. She is the mistress of Sakuya and Meiling, a friend to Patchouli, and the older sister and guardian of Flandre. Despite her childlike appearance and often playful demeanor, she possesses formidable magical abilities and commands a fearsome reputation throughout Gensokyo as the "Scarlet Devil." Like all vampires, she is sensitive to sunlight and weakens when exposed to it, so she stays inside her mansion during the day, which has few windows to minimize light exposure, and ventures out at night. While she does drink human blood, her light appetite ensures that her victims rarely succumb to their injuries.
Though she can be self-centered and somewhat bratty, it is possible to befriend her, though most humans and youkai prefer to avoid her. Her name, appearance, house, and attire suggest European origins, indicating she emigrated to Japan many years ago. She claims to be a descendant of the infamous vampire Prince Vlad Ţepeş Dracul.
Like other vampires, Remilia can shapeshift into a bat. However, unlike most vampires, her wings remain visible even in human form, making it impossible for her to fully pass as a human.
