Mokou was once an ordinary human who became immortal after consuming the Hourai Elixir around 1300 years ago. Though she cannot die, she still experiences pain from injuries. Her longevity has granted her considerable power, making her a formidable opponent due to her inability to be killed permanently.
She harbors deep resentment towards Kaguya, the moon princess, ever since Kaguya rejected Mokou's father's marriage proposal following his failure to complete her Impossible Requests. Despite the centuries that have passed, their animosity endures, though neither can ultimately defeat the other. When not clashing with Kaguya, Mokou assists villagers by eliminating youkai and guiding them to Eientei for medical care.
A natural loner, Mokou avoids social interactions with both humans and youkai. Her demeanor can shift swiftly from friendly to threatening, yet her actions often suggest a good nature. Based on her surname and backstory, she is believed to be the daughter of Kuramochi no Miko, who was tasked with retrieving the Jeweled Branch of Hourai by Kaguya. This historical figure is speculated to be modeled after Fujiwara no Fuhito, founder of the influential Fujiwara clan.
Mokou is one of the few in Gensokyo to wear pants, which, along with her assertive speech, often leads to her being perceived as a tomboy. Given the feudal Japanese setting of Gensokyo, pants are rare and expensive, possibly serving as a status symbol. Considering her aristocratic background and rugged lifestyle, it makes sense for her to prefer wearing them.
