Dr. Peter Stevens is the scientist who developed the cold sleep capsules. As a scientist, Peter is highly observant. Even amidst the confusion and panic, he noticed that among the survivors of the initial monster attack, only the Senator and Kasumi tried to reach the elevator. The others did not attempt to escape, leading Peter to speculate that they might have known they were facing certain death.
However, this seems to be an incorrect assumption. Katherine attempted to run but was knocked down by other panicked Medusa victims. Peter and Ron paused to ensure she was okay. Tim was too terrified to move, and Marco, naturally, was the only one who had any understanding of what was happening.
