Otose is Gintoki's landlady. He promised to protect her after consuming food offerings meant for her deceased husband. Her real name is Ayano Terada, with "Otose" being a pseudonym or "genji" alias. In her youth, she was very attractive and worked at a restaurant where she secretly provided free dumplings to underprivileged children, which led to her dismissal. She is a smoker.
Despite frequent arguments over Gintoki's inability to pay rent, she trusts in his ability to defend her. In episode 22, she demonstrates considerable skill in martial arts or at least above-average reflexes by dodging Ayame's flying kick simply by tilting her head to the left and catching a thrown dagger between two fingers, which she then pockets. She is one of the four "emperors" who govern the Kabuki District.
The character Otose is inspired by a real person from the Bakumatsu period who ran a hotel and often hid rebels from the Shinsengumi.
