A young and kind man from Japan, an expert in kung-fu, discovered one day that he had contracted Zonapha syndrome—an illness causing respiratory issues and unbearable pain. A victim of this syndrome cannot be cured, but the crises can be averted if the victim makes people laugh. Thus, Narumi decided to become a clown to survive, but unfortunately, he was terrible at it. One day, he met Masaru, the only child who laughed at his jokes. When he saw the boy was in trouble, he decided to help him.
In volume 7, it is revealed that Narumi survived, albeit having lost his left arm and his memories. He became immortal thanks to Guy Rech, who made him drink a substance called Aqua vitae. Slowly but surely, Narumi loses his humanity and transforms into a monster whose sole purpose is to destroy the Automatons.
