Mutsu serves as the second-in-command of the merchant fleet Kaientai, but she effectively runs the company. This is due to her "natural idiot" leader, Sakamoto Tatsuma, frequently going missing in action. At one point, she even installed a homing device in his pistol so that whenever he fired it, she could track his location.

She hails from the Yato Tribe, and her fighting style and exceptional physical abilities are typical of her people, which allowed Gintoki to identify her race.

Before joining Sakamoto, Mutsu was a space pirate. She held the position of Vice-Commander in the 2nd Division of the Chidori, a group known for selling slaves. Upon discovering their plan to eliminate her following her father's death, Mutsu switched sides and joined Kaientai after Sakamoto took over the pirates' ships.
