Misaki is an enigmatic girl who decides to help Tatsuhiro break free from his hikikomori lifestyle. She persuades him to sign a contract, involving him in her "grand project," with the aim of transforming him into a more socially adjusted individual. Despite seeing through his actions, she reads beginner psychology books to understand his feelings and attempt to "save" him.
Towards the end, Misaki reveals to Tatsuhiro that when she observed him from her mansion, she believed she had finally found someone even more socially isolated than herself. She tries to make Tatsuhiro fall in love with her so he would depend on her, but when he rejects her love contract, she feels unwanted. Consequently, she attempts suicide but fails.
Misaki is admitted to a hospital, and Tatsuhiro visits her. She leaves a farewell note and isn't in the room. Tatsuhiro rushes to a cliff to find her attempting suicide again. As she leans over the edge, he catches her and explains that if anyone is to blame for her miserable life, it must be the N.H.K., which he claims has been targeting him. He tries to commit suicide but fails due to a cage built just below the cliff.
Tatsuhiro relocates to a new place because his old apartment is under construction and starts engaging in part-time jobs to overcome his hikikomori tendencies. Misaki gives him a new contract stating they will dedicate their lives to each other and die together.
In the original manga adaptation of Welcome to the N.H.K., Misaki's personality differs significantly from her anime counterpart. The most notable change is that she has a more negative influence on Satou in the manga. In the anime, her struggle with society stems from guilt over her parents' death. In the manga, her parents are still alive, but she lies about their deaths to manipulate Satou into staying with her. She is not in school because she failed the year, likely due to difficulties fitting in with her peers. Her school therapist informally diagnoses her with Borderline Personality Disorder, explaining her challenges in making friends outside of Satou, hikikomoris, and those she considers beneath her.
At the end of the manga, Misaki and Satou nearly commit suicide by hiding in the attic of the apartment building as construction workers demolish it. At the last moment, Satou runs out, followed by Misaki. He declares he will return to his parents' house to work towards becoming a game designer and eventually learn to love Misaki. It remains ambiguous whether this actually happens or not.
