The main protagonist of the series is a first-year student and the third member of the school's cycling club. Originally, he led a quiet, somewhat boring life and faced daily bullying from upperclassmen. One day, Yuki Fukazawa invites him to join the school's cycling club. Initially, he rejects this offer because of a forgotten childhood trauma that makes him fear bicycles and forget how to ride one.
However, wanting to impress Yuki, he secretly begins training and during this short period, he starts to develop an appreciation for cycling. Eventually, he joins the club and vows to become the greatest cyclist in the world. Yousuke, recognizing Mikoto's potential, gladly accepts him after letting him take a little test. Kouichi, however, is initially reluctant due to Mikoto's natural clumsiness and frail appearance. His opinion changes once he sees Mikoto riding a bicycle successfully.
Through hard work, Mikoto earns the respect of his teammates and Yuki. Days before a race, Mikoto doubts his ability to participate, but after watching a video of an actual race from Terao, he becomes eager to compete. During the race, despite limited training, Mikoto proves to be a strong competitor, even holding his own against Naoto, considered one of Japan's best cyclists. Mikoto finishes second to Naoto in the sprinting stage but is exhausted due to his lack of racing experience.
Naoto attempts to break Mikoto's spirit by breaking away at the mountain stage, with Yousuke and Terao following. Yamato, who had stopped earlier, catches up to Mikoto and says something to him before leaving. Impressed by Mikoto, fans begin cheering for him, much to the surprise of Yuki and his family. Encouraged by this support, Mikoto gains a second wind and charges up the mountain to catch up with the leaders.
Everyone at the front is astonished as Mikoto catches up and shifts gears, surprising everyone as he was pedaling at a high rate in such a big gear. Refusing to give up, Mikoto pushes ahead and wins the King of the Mountain stage. Now extremely tired, Mikoto slows down but is celebrated by fans and teammates alike for his remarkable performance.
