A middle school student of uncertain origin who was rescued from the sea by a passing ferry. She has a strong attachment to Mai, though her main reason for attending Fuuka Academy is to search for her brother.
Her Element is a large jet-black claymore named Miroku, which responds to her call whenever she is not near it. Miroku possesses several special abilities, including the power to cut through almost any object, such as cruise ships, without needing to be physically swung, and the ability to summon energy blasts. When these powers are used, glowing red eye-shaped markings appear on the blade. Initially, it is assumed that the sword itself is her Child, but it is later revealed that her true Child is a monstrous ogre-like creature wielding a gigantic spiked club, also named Miroku. This Child is known as the protector of the Obsidian Lord and seems to be under his control rather than Mikoto's, as shown when Miroku attempted in vain to stop Kagutsuchi's attack from destroying the Obsidian Lord.
During the first few episodes, Mikoto behaves as if she was raised by cats (in My-Otome, she is referred to as the "Cat Goddess").
