Michiru has Shinigami Eyes, enabling her to see a ring around a person's neck that signifies their impending death. However, she despises this ability because she once saw dark rings around her parents' necks before they died in an accident. To suppress her power and live normally, she wears special glasses. Since her parents' death, Michiru has felt indifferent towards life, lacking ambition or concern for her own survival, which disgusts Shito. As the story progresses, she begins to develop a desire to live and protect her friends.
Michiru first encounters Chika and Shito in her school hallway when she accidentally trips over Chika’s hand. Upon discovering their secret, they initially consider killing her but decide instead to recruit her due to her Shinigami Eyes. They inform her that she will be helping them hunt and fight zombies, despite her objections. After several failures and meeting other members of the Z-Loan office, Michiru eventually accepts her new role. She often bears the brunt of Chika’s abuse and is initially nicknamed "500-yen" by him because he believes she owes him ¥500. Later, he starts calling her a "gopher" because she tends to follow others' requests without question.
She shares a close bond with Zarame, the Grim Reaper, whom she can understand and communicate with easily. Zarame rarely leaves her side. Michiru has a fondness for cute things.
