This connection is due to their contract with Zombie-Loan, which revived them after losing their real right hands in an accident. Chika wields a katana with Shito's right hand, which is actually his original right hand, giving the katana Shinigami abilities. Using this katana, Chika performs spiritual memorials for defeated zombies, showing genuine care and sympathy despite his temper.
Both Chika and Shito have free will and emotions, yet they are still considered zombies. Their ultimate goal is to regain their lives. Chika comes from a cheerful family, though he lives in special dorms instead of with them. His father, a doting cross-dresser, constantly annoys Chika by fussing over him. His sister is more interested in her cellphone and indifferent to her surroundings, but Chika adores her and craves her attention. He fears returning home might result in being treated as an outcast, worrying that his hand might suddenly rot off, causing his family to detest and fear him.
