Maya Ibuki is a First Lieutenant at NERV and serves as a computer technician, primarily working alongside Ritsuko Akagi. Her primary responsibility during Angel confrontations is to continuously monitor the synchronization ratios of the Eva pilots and transmit various emergency commands to the Evangelions as directed by Misato or Gendo. A scene from "The End of Evangelion" movie has been interpreted by numerous fans as hinting at Maya's secret affection for Ritsuko. During Maya's Instrumentality, Lilith, appearing in the form of Ritsuko, types "I need you" into Maya's laptop and embraces her. Following this, Maya's reversion to LCL fluid is accompanied by an ecstatic exclamation of "Senpai!" However, this single scene is the only indication of potential feelings towards Ritsuko, leaving its meaning ambiguous. Despite her professional role, Maya detests any form of violence and is often depicted feeling nauseous and averting her gaze during battles with Angels. Notably, in "The End of Evangelion," Maya is the sole NERV officer shown refusing to retaliate against JSSDF invaders. She declines a gun offered by Shigeru to defend herself, stating, "I can't shoot this thing," not due to lack of skill but because she has never fired it at a human. Throughout much of the latter half of "End of Evangelion," Maya is frequently seen burying her face in a pink pillow under her desk.
She is sometimes portrayed as embodying the audience's perspective throughout the series, expressing disgust when viewers would likely feel the same and delight in more lighthearted scenes.
