Matako is the sole female member of the Kiheitai and is proficient with a pair of pistols. She is fiercely loyal to Takasugi and seems to have romantic feelings for him.
She becomes enraged and confronts Nizou after he goes on a destructive spree in Edo, attempting to kill Takasugi's former comrades.
Matako has a quick temper and tends to scream when upset. This is evident during her "spitting fight" with Kagura and when she yells at Kagura after hearing that her underwear was supposedly stained. She shoots Kagura through the shoulder when Kagura boards their ship.
Matako interacts most frequently with Takechi, referring to him as 'senpai' and teasing him by calling him a 'pervert' and a 'lolicon' for sparing Kagura instead of killing her.
At the conclusion of the Benizakura arc, she is injured by Okada after he loses control.
Her name is loosely inspired by a Bakumatsu-era samurai named Kijima Matabei.
