He joined the Self-Defense Force primarily for economic reasons and has always tried to avoid situations where he might have to take lives. In 1991, the mere prospect of Japan deploying warships to assist U.S. operations against Iraq during the Gulf War prompted him to consider resigning from the academy. However, his strong bond with Kadomatsu and Oguri led him to stay, as leaving would strain their friendship. His reluctance to harm others tragically backfires when he hesitates to fully engage against attacking U.S. naval aircraft, resulting in significant damage to the Mirai and numerous casualties. Furthermore, he is deeply apprehensive about altering the past and its potential consequences. From the moment the Mirai travels back in time, he persistently warns the crew about the dangers of changing history.
