She has a habit of uttering "uu-uu" at times, which greatly frustrates Rosa. Maria is also rather stubborn and tends to believe things easily, traits not uncommon for someone her age. She has an interest in the occult, similar to her grandfather. She carries around a bag filled with occult items, such as a scorpion charm that wards off evil. She idolizes witches, believing they bring joy and happiness. Her notebooks contain sketches of beautiful, fantastical witches. It upsets Maria when someone denies the existence of witches, especially Beatrice. Occasionally, Maria undergoes a personality change, laughing unnervingly and acting condescendingly about the occult, often calling people like Battler "stupid" for their lack of knowledge. Maria is bullied in her class; boys often take her books, saying she has "germs." However, Maria is content with this treatment. She imagines a story where a horrid witch terrorizes the school, causing accidents, but an angel offers one student as a sacrifice to keep others safe. With this story, Maria feels she can shoulder the burden so others remain safe, thus not minding the bullying. Although she has no real friends, Maria breathes life into her stuffed animals, particularly Sakutaro. Originally a stuffed lion cub made by Rosa as a birthday gift, Sakutaro was cherished by Maria until Rosa ripped him apart. Maria is an innocent child who believes her mother works long hours and weekends. Even when Rosa forgets promises or takes impromptu holidays, Maria believes her mother's work is more important. Once, when Maria called Rosa's office, she was told her mother wasn't there, yet Maria still believed her mother. Rosa sometimes gives in to guilt, buying Maria gifts like "the rabbit band" or Western sweets. In the Umineko series, magic's existence is debated, but Maria has her own grimoire with spells like "have [x] for dinner" or "make mama come home early." One spell for her mother's love requires only "uu-uu," inspired by a touching day spent with Rosa on a picnic. Rosa taught Maria a song, finding it charming when Maria sang "uu-uu" after forgetting the words. Eventually, Rosa grew frustrated and hit Maria, leading Maria to say Rosa was taken over by "the black witch." Maria is a member of Mariage Sorcière, an alliance of witches including her idol, Beatrice. Despite having the same wand as Eva-Beatrice, she is not an Endless Witch successor. By giving Sakutaro a soul, she is a potential Creator, a witch with a higher rank than Bernkastel and Lambdadelta, who may be able to create even a galaxy from nothing. She is also the witch teacher of Ange, despite them not seeing each other as she was banished from Mariage Sorcière.
