In the anime, it is revealed that Maira, formerly a Pawn, became a Bishop after acquiring the ÄRM Vaqua. His backstory is not explored in the manga. Maira is depicted as a black-cloaked, masked man who delights in engulfing and digesting people with Vaqua. Vaqua is a blue-green, slime-like Guardian ÄRM with one eye.
Maira first appears observing the War Game battle between Ginta Toramizu and Garon. During the second round of the War Games, he reappears as a fighter for the Chess Pieces and participates in the final battle of that round against Dorothy.
Maira quickly misjudges Dorothy's power, easily destroying one of her weaker Guardians and stalemating another. However, Dorothy recalls this Guardian and summons her favorite, Toto, which consumes Maira's Vaqua.
Now without his ÄRM, Maira begs Dorothy for mercy. But Dorothy does not grant it and has Toto consume Maira as well, making him the first casualty of the War Games.
