At the start of the series, Machika is a fourteen-year-old assassin. She has recently lost her grandfather, who was likely her sole guardian, a month before the story begins. Machika is a tomboy with little interest in men until she encounters Rain and falls in love with him. Her grandfather, known as Zol the Assassin, had never been able to catch Rain, the one bounty that eluded him. This is why Machika initially sets out to hunt down Rain.
