Kyouko is Tooru's mother. When she was young, Kyouko caused trouble and skipped classes, leading to her disownment by her parents after a gang fight. She harbored deep resentment towards her family, as her father believed she had no place in the world, and her mother only cared about maintaining the family's image. Kyouko was also the leader of an all-female suicide gang, earning the nickname "The Red Butterfly." This name came from the way the tail lights on her motorcycle danced like a bright red butterfly when she rode at night. However, Kyouko eventually moved on and found employment. At some point, Kyouko fell in love with a student teacher named Katsuya Honda, which influenced her decision to leave her gang. After being beaten by her gang and disowned by her parents, Katsuya stood up for her and proposed marriage. They soon married and had a daughter, Tooru. Katsuya became a positive influence in her life, and together they worked through various challenges. When he died from illness, Kyouko fell into a deep sadness, neglecting Tooru and almost committing suicide by throwing herself into the sea, hoping to reunite with Katsuya. Just as she was about to jump, Kyouko saw a girl and her mother by the seaside and came to her senses. She returned home to find little Tooru waiting for her, similar to how Katsuya used to greet her. Kyouko then vowed never again to disregard Tooru for any reason; she raised Tooru by herself and also cared for Arisa Uotani and Saki Hanajima, Tooru's best friends. When Tooru disappeared one day as a young child, Kyouko was distraught, even threatening the police if they did not find her. After Yuki Souma, who had heard Kyouko's description of Tooru, led the confused girl home, Kyouko was overjoyed.
