Kyou is a stubborn and hot-tempered boy who gets easily provoked in any situation. Like many members of the Sohma clan, he transforms into an animal from the Zodiac when hugged by someone of the opposite gender. His Zodiac animal is the cat, which, according to legend, was tricked by the rat and thus excluded from the official twelve animals. This leads Kyou to resent Yuki, the current rat of the family, resulting in frequent fights where Kyou always loses.
Since meeting Honda Tooru, who admires the legendary cat of the Zodiac, Kyou has shown a softer side of himself. He has always been isolated from the Sohma family, including his parents, which likely contributes to his short temper and stubbornness. Kyou constantly trains in martial arts with the goal of one day defeating Yuki. His martial arts master is one of the few people he truly respects.
