Ochi is another insei in the same group as Hikaru. At just 12 years old when introduced, he is one of the youngest but also very outspoken about his abilities. His frequent boasting about his strength masks his underlying insecurity; after each defeat, he often retreats to the restroom for extended periods. Akira tutors him to learn more about Hikaru's current skill level. Ochi feels unsettled by Hikaru because Akira's intense focus on him suggests there is more to Hikaru than what Ochi understands. Ochi is frustrated that Akira considers Hikaru a rival but does not view Ochi in the same light. He challenges Akira to recognize him as a rival if he can beat Hikaru in the pro exam. Despite losing to Hikaru, Ochi successfully passes the pro exam. Coming from a wealthy family, numerous professional players come to his home to privately tutor him in Go.
