A youkai who facilitates passage across the river between Gensokyo and the afterlife.
She possesses the ability to manipulate distance.
When someone dies, their spirit must cross the river to reach the Netherworld. It is Komachi's responsibility to ferry these spirits across. The river's width and depth can change based on her mood. If a person has committed significant evil during their lifetime, they may not be able to cross the river at all.
A shinigami determines whether one is good or bad not by the number of crimes committed, but by the amount of money representing the love and longing from those left behind. This isn't about the deceased's wealth but the total sum felt by friends and family. Judging the severity of crimes is not part of Komachi's duties; that happens after crossing the river, though that’s another story.
After death, when Komachi asks for a passage fee, people are often surprised because the money they need corresponds to the emotional wealth of their loved ones, not their own assets. Rich individuals, often resented in life, are shocked by how little they have after death.
Komachi always demands full payment from those she guides. Anyone hesitant to pay the full amount is dropped into the river mid-journey. The river becomes infinitely wide, and unfortunate spirits are quickly consumed by giant fish and extinct sea creatures.
Gensokyo was once buried under a sea of flowers because Komachi's workload became overwhelming. Many spirits were left unattended and ended up possessing nearby flowers. Thinking it was just a temporary issue, Komachi worked at her usual pace without concern. However, her boss, Shikieiki, soon noticed and reprimanded her for the delay.
