He is the youngest member of Shitenhouji, a team introduced during the Nationals Tournament in the OVA. Kintarou first appears in the second episode of the OVAs when he bumps into Horio Junpei, a minor character and cousin of Seigaku freshman Satoshi Horio. Kintarou heads to the Nationals Tournament in Tokyo but mistakenly gets off the train at the wrong stop, thinking he had already arrived since Mount Fuji was visible. The situation differs between the anime and manga but follows the same storyline. In the manga, it is revealed that Kintarou is a player for Shitenhouji, one of the strongest teams in the Nationals and a significant challenge for Seigaku. He is depicted in the opening song as Ryoma's equal and new rival. There is also a scene where Hyotei Gakuen's Yuushi Oshitari talks to his cousin Kenya, who is a member of Shitenhouji, about Kintarou's talents. This interaction sets up a comparison between the two gifted players and hints at a brewing rivalry between players from the South and those from Tokyo. Kintarou has an unusual fear of Shitenhouji's captain, Kuranosuke Shiraishi. After reading a manga about monsters with poison claws, he imagines that Kuranosuke has similar abilities under his bandages. Kintarou takes this fear seriously and restrains himself when Kuranosuke uses this idea to threaten him, though this only happens if Kintarou crosses a line or if Kuranosuke needs something done. Kintarou's cheerful personality shines through when he befriends Junpei and later meets Ryoma's friend Sakuno Ryuzaki. After accidentally falling on her from a tree branch, he eats some rice balls she made that had fallen to the ground and compliments her cooking. **Trivia:** Kintarou believes Echizen's name should be read as "Koshimae" and calls him that frequently (the kanji for Echizen can also be read as Koshimae). His grasp of the Japanese language isn't great. When his teammate Kenya Oshitari describes Ryoma as having "nerves of steel and san paku gan," Kintarou misinterprets this as Ryoma having "a body of steel, deadly toxin-releasing fingers, and three eyes."
