An extremely intelligent, elite-level police detective (superintendent) who is Kenmochi's supervisor. First appearing in "Death TV," he is portrayed as an arrogant and snobbish character who becomes a rival to Kinda'ichi in solving crimes. However, Akechi inadvertently helps Kinda'ichi solve the case and even aids him out of trouble. Their relationship is abrasive at best, but they share an unspoken mutual respect for each other's abilities. He often compares Japanese crimes to his experiences in Los Angeles. Proficient in English and French, it is revealed in "The Magical Express" that he met Reiko Chikamiya before her death, which eventually assists Kinda'ichi in solving the case. In "Murder at Hell's School," disguised as a math teacher, he claims to have been a teacher at a prestigious prep school for three years. His name may be a nod to the classic Japanese detective Kogoro Akechi created by Edogawa Rampo.
