High school student Hajime Kindaichi is often seen as unmotivated, lazy, and a bit lecherous, much to the frustration of his childhood friend, Miyuki Nanase. However, beneath this facade lies a brilliant mind with an IQ of 180, showcasing exceptional intelligence and deductive skills, possibly inherited from his grandfather, private detective Kosuke Kindaichi (a fictional character created by Seishi Yokomizo, known as the "Japanese Columbo" by some. The creators of Hajime's series did not obtain permission from Yokomizo's family, leading to complaints when the series gained popularity. It appears the issue was resolved without legal action, and Kosuke's role as Hajime's grandfather is not explicitly mentioned in later episodes).
Hajime's catchphrases include, "In the name of my grandfather..." when he commits to solving a murder mystery, and "This mystery is solved!" signaling to the audience that they now have all the necessary facts to deduce the killer's identity and methods. Additionally, he is skilled in sleight of hand. Despite being portrayed as unpopular with girls initially, his kindness has won the hearts of several female characters throughout the series, including Miyuki Nanase, Reika Hayami, and Sakura Izumi. Although clumsy and flawed in many ways, Hajime remains a loyal friend and an outstanding detective.
