Shibuya Kazuya is the president of SPR. He is sharp and highly intelligent but also quite narcissistic, earning him the nickname "Naru" from Mai, short for narcissist. Unlike other characters, he does not seem to have any spiritual powers and relies on his intellect and knowledge, along with his team's abilities, to solve their cases.
Though he appears cold and critical to his friends, he deeply cares for them and has earned their trust and respect. His relationship with Mai is notably close, as she is the only girl he addresses by her given name, much to Masako's jealousy.

When he was younger, Naru caused psychokinesis and poltergeist effects due to his immense power. As Lin once said, "Naru's power is in a league of its own," which is why Lin taught Naru how to control his abilities. Using his power puts significant stress on Naru's body, even causing him to stop breathing at times.

It is eventually revealed that Naru is actually the renowned paranormal researcher and psychic, Oliver Davis. He possesses strong psychokinetic abilities, witnessed by Masako Hara. Although trained by Lin Koujo to manage his powers, using them takes a heavy toll on his body. The one time he uses his abilities in the series, he collapses and ends up hospitalized.
Naru had a twin brother named Eugene, whom Mai sees in her dreams as "dream Naru." Eugene initially helped Naru control his powers. They were nicknamed Gene and Noll; when Mai calls him Naru ('Na-ru'), he is surprised because it sounds similar to Noll ('No-ru') in Japanese. Naru and his brother were orphans adopted by the Davises, who are paranormal researchers in England. Naru learns of his brother's death and, using psychometry, is led to Japan. It is discovered that Gene was hit by a car driven by an unknown woman and his body was thrown into a lake to cover up the accident.
