Kankou, also known as Umibouzu (星海坊主), is the father of Kagura and Kamui and one of the last surviving members of the Yato clan. Like his daughter Kagura, he wields an umbrella in combat but is notably powerful in his own right. He is among the few characters capable of overpowering Kagura. He makes his appearance when an alien takes over the Terminal, assisting the Yorozuya in defeating the creature. It is revealed that he has a cybernetic arm.
After departing to hunt aliens across the galaxy, he later communicates with his daughter through a letter, advising her that Sadaharu is a monster they should eliminate. In the anime, he becomes the leader of the "Principality," recruited by a Char Aznable lookalike. In the manga, he is recruited by a character resembling Darth Vader.
In both the manga and anime, Kankou also participates in a hair-growing shampoo advertisement, which the Yorozuya complain is excessively long. Hideaki Sorachi disclosed in a Q&A in volume 57 that Umibozu's real name is Kankou.
