A young man discovers Atsuki asleep in the snow one day, exhausted from preparing for her high school entrance exams. Despite his illness preventing him from attending school, Kai is highly intelligent and decides to tutor Atsuki, growing closer to her over time. He promises to meet her at the school on the day Atsuki finds out her exam results but never arrives. Atsuki later learns that Kai's illness was more severe than he had admitted, and his absence was due to his untimely death. Before this, he asked Takami, his younger brother, to look after Atsuki if the worst should happen.
