Jet, known on his home satellite as the "Black Dog" for his tenacity, is a 36-year-old former cop from Ganymede, a moon of Jupiter. He serves as Spike's foil throughout the series. Physically imposing, Jet is tall and muscular, with a distinctive appearance: he sports a beard but no mustache, and is bald except for the hair at the back of his head. While Spike often appears lazy and indifferent, Jet is diligent and versatile.
Jet previously worked as an investigator for the Inter Solar System Police (ISSP) until an investigation went wrong, resulting in the betrayal by his corrupt partner, who was also his friend at the time. This incident led to the loss of his arm, which was replaced with a cybernetic limb—a choice he made to serve as a reminder of what happened. Disillusioned by the corruption within the police force, Jet resigned from the ISSP and became a freelance bounty hunter.
Beyond his professional life, Jet considers himself a renaissance man. He enjoys cultivating bonsai trees, cooking, and listening to jazz and blues music, particularly Charlie Parker. His ship, the Bebop, is named after a type of jazz. He even has an interest in Goethe. Despite his efforts to be seen as more of a brotherly figure, Jet often comes across as the quintessential "dad" or oyaji.
Jet is proficient with firearms, typically carrying a pre-2004 Walther P99 and using a netgun. He excels in hand-to-hand combat, relying more on brute strength than technique. Additionally, he is a skilled mechanic and pilot. Besides the converted interplanetary fishing trawler Bebop, Jet pilots a smaller ship called the Hammerhead, which he modified with larger engines and fuel tanks. The Hammerhead features a mechanical arm equipped with a harpoon, echoing Jet's own cybernetic arm. Both ships are capable of landing on water and have a fishing theme, reflecting Ganymede's mostly aquatic surface.
During the series, it is revealed that Jet once lived with a woman named Alisa, who left him due to his controlling behavior. They meet again when Alisa's new boyfriend, Rhint, becomes a murder suspect. This places Jet in a situation reminiscent of Vicious, where he must hunt down a woman who broke his heart and her lover.
In another episode, Jet discovers that his old partner Fad betrayed him during the fateful mission that cost him his arm. Unlike Spike, who faced a tragic end confronting his past, Jet confronts and ultimately lets go of his demons. This contrast highlights their differing approaches to dealing with their pasts: while Spike avoided and ran from his, Jet sought out and confronted his.
