miura ito

A tomboyish girl, she is the only daughter in a family dominated by males, including her father and three brothers. After her mother died in a car accident, she began wearing boys' clothes and adopted a boyish haircut when she was in first grade. It was revealed in volume 10 that one reason for this change was due to bullying from a boy named Jôtarô Kai during elementary school. He teased her relentlessly, especially when her older brothers tried to protect her. Since then, she has consistently worn masculine clothing, even at school, much to the irritation of most of her teachers. Despite this, many girls at school idolize her and she is known for being mobbed every Valentine's Day. When Ito discovers that Makoto is actually male, she decides to help him and eventually falls in love with him. Over the course of the series, Ito begins to embrace more feminine traits, initially unconsciously but later with deliberate intent, as she aims to be the perfect girl for Makoto. Ito has several admirers. Toki-sempai, two years her senior, wants her to become more feminine, become his girlfriend, and attend college with him. Tsugumi-sempai, one year ahead of her, has an obsession with Ito, particularly viewing her as a male figure, even referring to her as "Ito-kun," a predominantly male suffix. Additionally, there is Sakamoto, a self-proclaimed masochist who likes both Ito and Makoto after meeting Ito during a class trip to Hokkaido. In volume 10, Ito meets Jôtarô again, and he confesses that he teased her because he liked her. Surprised, Ito recalls that she once liked him too but rejects him, explaining that she is already in love with someone else. As an actor, Ito relies on her natural charisma and physical abilities rather than technical skills. She achieves average grades in school, though she struggles particularly with math. Her cooking skills are lacking, although the author notes that she excels at cooking for large groups. She is headstrong and often acts without fully considering the consequences, leading to some precarious situations with her admirers. The characters in Ito's name mean "thread," reflecting her father's wish for a name that is "slender and pretty" and her mother's desire for a name that "can be used to make something." Although Makoto's father sees her name as a bad omen, interpreting it as "a breaking thread," Ito views it as a blessing and a symbol of her creativity, a theme consistent throughout the series.
