Hikari Horaki (洞木 ヒカリ Horaki Hikari) serves as the class representative for the class that Shinji and the other Eva pilots are part of. Similar to her peers, she is an unwitting candidate for piloting an Eva. Hikari maintains a strict adherence to rules and takes her role as "class rep" very seriously. Despite often engaging in playful arguments with Toji, she confesses to Asuka that she harbors deep feelings for him but struggles to openly express her affection. Additionally, Hikari seems to be Asuka's sole friend. Following the battle against Arael, Asuka seeks refuge with Hikari and stays with her for some time. During a late-night conversation, Asuka shares her inner insecurities with Hikari, highlighting the strength of their friendship; however, Hikari feels saddened by the harsh words used by Asuka.
Hikari is a skilled cook who appears to take care of her two sisters. Like most of Shinji's classmates, it is implied that Hikari's mother has passed away. There is no mention regarding the status of her father.
Like Kensuke, Hikari's name originates from a character in Ryu Murakami's novel "The Fascism of Love and Fantasies" (Ai to Gensou no Fascism). The names of Hikari, her unseen younger sister Nozomi, and elder sister Kodama also reference the names of trains on the Tokaido Shinkansen line.
