Whenever something falls short of Madam Red's exacting standards, she vents her frustration on Grell, regardless of whether he is at fault. It is widely remarked that Grell's tea pales in comparison to Sebastian's. Grell's personality is meek, easily scandalized, and highly nervous, which starkly contrasts with his mistress's bold demeanor. This leads other characters to either overlook or take advantage of Grell. However, this mild-mannered facade conceals Grell's true identity as a death god. His real personality is as flamboyant—if not more so—than Madam Red's. The genuine Grell is a cheerful sadist who delights in flirting and committing bloody murders, sometimes simultaneously. He first encounters Madam Red during a night when she kills one of her patients, drawn to her not only because they share a favorite color, red, but also due to their shared issues regarding childbirth. Grell uses feminine pronouns and has a notable interest in Sebastian. At one point, he compares them to Romeo and Juliet during their battle, much to Sebastian's horror. Despite this interest, it is stated that his 'true love' is William. Grell's grasp on sanity seems tenuous at best, as he can switch from childish irritation to murderous rage in an instant. Like other death gods, Grell possesses a scythe, though he had it modified into a chainsaw, deeming a regular scythe outdated. Grell explains that his scythe can cut through anything; when it slices through a person, it divides their soul and memories, causing their life to flash before their eyes.
