Earl Ciel Phantomhive is a shrewd twelve-year-old (later thirteen-year-old) leader of the English noble Phantomhive family, assuming control after his parents, Lord Vincent and Lady Rachel Phantomhive, were killed. He also oversees the Funtom Company, which produces toys and sweets, and later expands into food production after securing a Royal Warrant. His right eye, usually hidden by a black eyepatch, bears the pentacle sign of a Faustian contract binding the demon Sebastian Michaelis to his will. He also has a burn mark on his back from being sold as a slave following the burning of his mansion. Ciel is engaged to his cousin, Elizabeth Midford. He views her as an essential friend and someone he must protect. His parents were murdered and his mansion set ablaze on his birthday, leading him to dislike celebrating the occasion. This tragedy instills in him a fear of losing anyone important again. Despite his young age, he manages the family company and remains busy with its operations but still finds time to investigate questionable legal matters. Throughout the series, Ciel's height is often used for comedic effect due to his short stature.
