Hiraga Gengai is Edo's premier mechanic and inventor. He has assisted Sakata Gintoki and the Yorozuya on multiple occasions.
He creates unattractive and rudimentary machines, believing that 'the tools of men are armor, cannons, and caterpillars.'
Gengai has a tendency to modify everything he touches, often forgetting to inform the users about crucial instructions until it's too late, leading them into trouble.
Hiraga Gengai was first introduced in episode 17 as a regular mechanic. The Yorozuya later discovered that his only son, Hiraga Saburou, had died during the Joui wars. His son's death left him emotionally scarred, which Takasugi Shinsuke exploited to make him attack a festival attended by the Shogun. However, with help from the Yorozuya and the Shinsengumi, the attack was thwarted, and Gengai was persuaded that revenge against the Bakufu was not the right path.
Currently, he runs Machine Hall, a workshop for machine repairs and inventions. He frequently repairs Gintoki's scooter. Despite this, he remains a fugitive, as indicated by his wanted poster at the end of Episode 17 and mentioned by Gintoki in the beginning of episode 67.
In the Lotus arc, he helped repair Tama by reusing No.305's body.
During the Tama's Virus Infection arc, he analyzed Tama's pixelated appearance and sent the Yorozuya into her body to combat the viruses.
In the Kabuki-cho arc, he appeared to assist in the battle against Doromizu Jirochou's men.
In chapter 318, he repaired Sa-chan's glasses, and in chapter 321, it was revealed that he had turned the glasses into a mass destruction weapon.
