Gat or Gato is a character in Saiyuki Reload who first appeared in the "Even a Worm Arc." His full name is Gaty Nene Hawk, as revealed in volume 9, chapter 43 of Saiyuki Reload. **Background** Hazel's large bodyguard and traveling companion, Gat wields two pistols. He fights recklessly for Hazel because he can be instantly revived or healed as long as Hazel has a soul stored in his pendant or there is a nearby corpse to take a soul from. His past is largely unknown except that he met Hazel several years ago, was injured by him but spared. Gat believes that being with and protecting Hazel is his destiny. He appears to be of Native American descent and does not require sleep. According to Ukoku Sanzo, Gat was once a young man from a tribe that worshipped nature. When demons they had made peace with attacked, Hazel tried to help. Initially opposing Hazel, Gat became the first human Hazel mistakenly killed. He was immediately brought back to life, but his tribe saw him as an abomination against nature and shunned him. A man from the Eastern continent, Gat visited Shangri-la with Hazel. He is a dead man brought back to life by Hazel's reanimation technique; Hazel is his world. Though he was once human, he can no longer elaborate on that experience. As Hazel’s bodyguard, Gat takes Hazel’s commands as absolute. Standing over two meters tall, with strong arms and quick movements, he defeats youkai with his highly accurate handguns and will sacrifice himself to protect Hazel. When he loses his life in battle, Hazel revives him using his reanimation technique. **Personality** Gat has yellow eyes specific to those who have been reanimated and a scar on his forehead given by Hazel during his life. He doesn’t need sleep, food, or any other necessities of living beings. He is extremely silent and expressionless but possesses a pacifist and good-natured heart. He considers Goku, who connected with him nonchalantly, a friend. **Difference Between Anime And Manga** In the Saiyuki Reloaded Gunlock anime, Gat’s origin story differs. He lived in a native tribe (location unspecified) that worshipped a being called the Great Spirit. Hunters eventually came and started killing wildlife. Gat and his tribe tried to stop them but were powerless against their guns. Fatally wounded by a bullet, Gat is revived by the Great Spirit and kills the hunters. Taken to Europe where Hazel was killing numerous demons, Gat reluctantly kills Hazel under the Great Spirit’s orders. Feeling guilty, Gat asks the Great Spirit to revive Hazel with his own life, which it does, giving Hazel’s mirror the ability to revive humans with youkai souls. Gat goes along with the Great Spirit's charade until the series finale, where he decides to fight the Sanzo party without Hazel using any souls to revive him.
