A tall, dark-haired, bespectacled girl. She is perceived by her peers as strong, refined, and gentle, yet they are often surprised to find that Fumi is actually very shy and reserved. People have remarked on her beautiful eyes and her soft, lady-like voice. When upset or irritated, she tends to make "scary faces." Despite her imposing stature and mature demeanor, which can sometimes be intimidating, Fumi is a reserved individual who is prone to crying. After returning to her hometown, she quickly rekindles her friendship with Okudaira Akira, a girl from her childhood. Fumi and Akira were best friends from a young age, around five or six years old. In kindergarten, Fumi relied heavily on Akira, often unable to do anything but cry until Akira came to "save" her and take care of her. This dynamic has not changed much as they've grown older, as Akira has observed. Fumi shares a close bond with her older cousin Chizu. She even asks Chizu to stay with her for a few more days in her new town. Fumi does not seem enthusiastic about moving back and wishes she could have stayed in her old town with her cousin. It is later revealed to Fumi that Chizu is to be married. Fumi had deep feelings for her cousin, who was aware of this. She feels betrayed by Chizu's neglect to inform her of the engagement. Fumi harbors a secret that she tries to keep to herself, but eventually confides in Akira. It becomes clear that Fumi likes other women, though she remains closeted. She hesitates to tell Akira this, but Akira accepts Fumi as she is, much to Fumi's relief. Early in her first year of high school, Fumi develops a crush on and dates Sugimoto Yasuko, but later realizes who she truly loves. Fumi notes that she is always the one who feels the most in her relationships and ends up getting dumped or having her feelings rejected. Over time, Fumi realizes she needs to stop letting others dominate her and starts standing up for herself, taking control of her life. Her development is gradual but steady, aided by Akira and the pain of several failed relationships, helping her understand herself better. Akira is Fumi's closest friend, and she cherishes her deeply. Fumi also forms several important friendships with other students at Fujigaya. As the series progresses, Fumi begins to see Kyouko as a mature, reasonable, and competent advisor despite their initially awkward and strained acquaintance. She also becomes very close to the vibrant and bold Oono Haruka. At Matsuoka, Fumi is friends with Pon-chan, Yassan, and Mogi, who tried to get her to join their club on her first day of school (which she turned down in favor of the Literature Club). Fumi remains a member of the Literature Club even after advancing into her second year of high school and continues to decline Pon-chan's suggestive invitations to the Drama Club. Despite having the physical attributes for an on-stage presence (tall frame, striking facial features), Fumi lacks acting abilities and becomes a nervous wreck while performing in front of people.
