Akira is an optimistic and supportive individual, always comforting those in need and seeking solutions to others' problems, even when she knows it might be better not to get involved. Though easily embarrassed, she isn't shy or reserved, often taking a more assertive stance against challenging situations. She dislikes seeing people hurt and tries, in her own ways, to prevent and avoid distress for others.
On their first day of high school, Akira saves Fumi from a pervert on the train. She walks part of the way with the tall girl, finding her elegant and gentle, and wonders if they will meet again. She is later shocked to discover that the girl she saved is her childhood friend. Their mothers are close friends, and their relationship rekindles when Manjoume Yoshie visits Okudaira Shouko, bringing Fumi along.
Growing up, Akira was taller than Fumi and acted as her protector. Despite Fumi now being taller, she still needs someone to look after her. Akira tends to neglect others and herself whenever Fumi needs her.
Akira attends Fujigaya Girls' Academy, an elite school requiring an entrance exam for high school admission. Despite her upbeat and open personality, she initially feels alienated among long-time students who attended the Academy's elementary and middle schools. This changes when she meets Ikumi Kyouko, who becomes her first and closest friend at Fujigaya.
Akira joins the prestigious Drama Club as a stagehand. In her second year, she lands a role in the school's production of "The Deer Cry Pavilion."
Despite her childlike appearance and behavior, Akira has a deep understanding and acceptance of people. She is very perceptive of others' feelings, figuring out things about them without direct explanation. This is evident when she realizes Kyouko may have romantic interests in girls and when Fumi comes out to her. She reprimands Yasuko for hurting Fumi and feels helpless and depressed when she can't protect Fumi from love-related issues.
Akira has an overprotective brother named Shinobu who tries to meddle in all aspects of her social life, including dropping her off at school and accompanying her to mixers to keep boys away.
Though attracting interest from Sawanoi Kou (Kyouko's cousin) and invited to group dates, Akira admits she isn't ready for dating. She claims not to fully understand romantic love or what it entails, wondering if she is immature and needs to grow up. Her love life seems less important compared to her concerns for her friends and helping them when needed.
