Fern belongs to a race of creatures known as the Hahze, or Onburu, who have a high resistance to magic. With his non-human appearance, Fern had few friends during his childhood. He was assigned to be Sylthfarn's body double, meaning any harmful spells cast on Sylthfarn would affect Fern instead. Over time, Sylthfarn convinced Fern they should become friends, and Fern felt deeply hurt when Sylthfarn vanished without a word.

Fern often comes across as brash, rude, and sarcastic with people he doesn't know. However, he is incredibly loyal to those he cares about.
