As a younger man, it was suggested that he suffered mistreatment and found comfort among the animals in the forest. Over time, he learned to communicate with them in their "language" and developed a wonderful rapport. Deeply grateful to Noriko for her simple act of saying "thank you" after he saved her life, he believes this gesture saved him in return. He would do anything for her. Having tamed two badly mistreated chimos, he now owns them. The two chimos Rachef spared produced two offspring, bringing his total to six chimos in his care.
