The leader of Zaibach and the primary antagonist in the series, he is reputed to be two hundred Earth years old. Throughout the series, he is revealed to be the scientist Isaac (possibly based on Isaac Newton).
Young Dornkirk discovered that physical attraction between matter is caused by gravitational force. Consequently, he theorized that everything in the universe, including fate and destiny, is governed by a universal law driven by some force. His theories led him to invent machines capable of predicting and altering the future. He was transported to Gaea and eventually became Emperor Dornkirk of Zaibach.
Dornkirk persistently uses his Destiny Prognostication Engine to foresee the future, aiming to create an ideal future for Gaea by uncovering the secrets of Atlantis. However, Hitomi's visions of the future and Van's connection to Escaflowne continually obstruct his plans.
The future he endeavors to create is the "zone of absolute fortune," where everyone's desires would be fulfilled. Ironically, it is this very power that brought about the destruction of Atlantis.

In the 1994 manga, Dornkirk assumes the same role as the villain but with a different objective. His ultimate goal is to return to Earth, as he originally hails from Earth among the ancients who migrated to Gaea.
