A mentally unstable pyromaniac with a shocking and bizarre history, Dilandau serves as the tactically ineffective commander of Zaibach empire's elite Dragonslayer unit. Showing no mercy, he burns towns to ashes at the slightest provocation. After sustaining injuries in a sword duel with Van Fanel, Dilandau becomes obsessed with him, placing vengeance above all else, naturally causing as much fire and collateral damage as possible.
As the series progresses, it is revealed that Dilandau is the outcome of Zaibach's experiments on Allen Schezar's sister, Celena. When Celena was kidnapped by Zaibach, they used her to test their "fate altering machine," which transformed her into Dilandau. Following a mental breakdown, the fate tampering begins to unravel, and Dilandau is sent back to Zaibach for repair. Once Allen uncovers the truth about Dilandau, he manages to convince him to stop resisting his true identity as Allen's sister, leading to Dilandau permanently reverting to Celena.
In the 1994 manga, Dilandau has a dramatically different appearance and character. He possesses dark skin and black curly hair that grows longer throughout the manga. In this version, he is one of Zaibach's most feared knights, responsible for destroying the kingdom of Fanelia and kidnapping Van's mother, Escalina. Keeping her alive initially, he is later ordered by Donkirk to kill her. At this point, he defects from Zaibach, fleeing with Escalina as his captive. From there, he pretends to collaborate with the resistance against Zaibach but harbors grander schemes.
