Sarutobi Ayame is a trained ninja from the Oniwabanshuu but now works as an assassin. She also holds a part-time job at the Kunoichi Café.
Since her first appearance, she has developed a serious and obsessive infatuation with Sakata Gintoki, even going so far as to stalk him. She suffers from severe myopia, almost to the point of blindness without her glasses, making it difficult for her to distinguish living beings from inanimate objects. Even with her glasses on, her vision remains poor; she once mistook Kagura, dressed up as Gintoki, for Gintoki himself. However, this could be attributed to her intense infatuation with him. She frequently clashes with Otae for various reasons.
Ayame has a playful demeanor but becomes serious when it comes to work. She seems to enjoy bondage and S&M activities. Despite Gintoki's indifference and often harsh treatment towards her (such as throwing things at her whenever he senses her stalking presence), her masochistic personality only makes her more attracted to him. His "cruelty" only serves to encourage her further.
