Ash is easily recognized by his distinctive mask: a grim reaper skull with its tongue sticking out. He joined the Chess Pieces hoping to leverage their immense power to conquer the world, thereby ending all wars and preventing the deaths of children he deeply cares about. Ash's personality stands out among the Chess Pieces; he is playful and fun-loving, often preferring peaceful resolutions over conflict. During a meeting, he urged other knights not to respond to Rapunzel's insolence with violence. Even Phantom, one of the more sadistic members of the Knights, admits that he could never hate Ash because of his inherently likable nature.
When not engaged in battle, Ash is almost always seen playing joyfully with children, particularly Defu, Ko, and Benni, whom he rescued from the war. He is also remarkably willing to accept punishment, sometimes volunteering for it when he believes he has done something wrong. Galian notes that Ash rarely gives up in battle. In his original design, Ash had few differences from his current appearance, the most notable being a regular mask instead of the skull one he now wears.
