Ai Kunugi sought out Misaki Saiki's assistance sometime after her sister took her own life following the accidental death of her infant niece. The baby's demise was wrongfully attributed to the mother, but Ai knew the truth: it was her sister's boyfriend, a yakuza boss named Kago, who was responsible. After this tragic event, Ai discovered she, like Misaki, had the ability to see and communicate with the dead. Ai is a very courageous girl who admires Misaki and aspires to be as strong as her. Misaki, however, wishes Ai would ignore the many spirits that Ai frequently encounters. Ai is also a classmate of Mitsuru Fujiwara, the young boy who is stalking Misaki. (source: Absolute Anime)
