I think now I might be a "shin supporter", I feel horrible for the guy, he got screwed over like that ... No wonder he is somewhat extreme. Anyways by "saving the Earth" does that mean that somehow the technology on that base, if discovered, would lead to the destruction of Earth?

I took as he literally wants to save the earth because he thinks the technology on their base is too advanced? Honestly though I'm not even sure if I'm on the right chapter here so I'm going to stop here.
