I had suspected that he had idealized his father for the past 8 years, silently blaming his mother (which also explains how their relationship has changed over time, with him as a child trying to impress her & being encouraged through her support to the present where he was annoyed to see her after the accident and makes his mother feel like she's failed him) so the shock must've been really bad.
I'm just glad that he didn't decide to stab himself in the neck or slit his wrists or anything.
