Maison Ikkoku Chapter 31 Discussion

I am a bit confused by what Mitaka says to Ms. Otonashi here:



Mitaka:  In a roundabout way I am asking you to marry me.



Otonashi:  [I thought so] ... I really don't know what to say.



Mitaka:  I understand ... I can only wait two or three more years.



Otonashi:  I'm sorry.



Mitaka:  Don't worry about it. [I figure in two or three more years I can finally cure myself of my fear of gods]



What exactly does he mean by with that last thought bubble? What relevance does his fear of dogs, and curing himself of this, have with marrying Ms. Otonashi? Is there a translation issue, because to me this makes no sense?

                        Feel kind of bad for Mitaka, he got stood up and he has no idea that he angered Kyoko. Of course, I can't blame her for being angry given what she "saw". Nice to get a glimpse of her fiery temper that hasn't been shown off to much as of yet.

Obviously, marrying someone like Kyoko owning a dog when you absolutely can't contain yourself with those animals can be a problem.
