What a pivot. Sadamoto's direction of the series is remarkably different.

What happened in the anime was different....

I remember being seriously pissed with the anime with how it dealt with Toji after this. Or should I say it did nothing at all. Cause Toji was never even mentioned again iirc. I thought it was really ridiculous that the anime just managed to get away with it.....

Toji's death was harrowing, and at least the manga did some sort of justice by effectively killing him rather than leaving him in the cold. All in all I'm not the biggest fan of this volume, mainly because of how convenient all of the setup was. I'm interested to see how Shinji will react to this. This chapter just left me in shock, I had to stop reading for a while and collect my thoughts. It also hit me in the feels when he got selected as the pilot in the previous chapter. Toji started to break down in front of Shinji and regrets picking on him, now that he is in the same shoes as Shinji. I do prefer this outcome over the anime, as it impacts Shinji's character development in a way.

Hikari does not even realize what is coming

So far the manga hits harder than the Anime

Damn, I totally didn't expect Toji to die in this version. That was truly brutal. I had to look up this discussion just to be certain if he did actually die in the anime version too. This is the first big change to the TV-series that I've spotted.

My god....he died. Toji died. That was not how it played out in the anime. The shot of the tear going down Shinji's face with the look of emptiness. The panel with a shot of Toji's lifeless face.....god damn.

Showing his body and face like that.....disturbing.

I had the same thought. For a moment I thought that he might be alive, but then I read the part about his pulse....

I found Touji to be one of the best characters in there. As the episodes/chapters went by, I started liking him even more after seeing what lies behind his "tough boy" attitude. I believe that the manga handled this better, because in the anime we learn about the loss of his leg and then we don't see or hear about him again (I don't count Shinji's subconsious)

It was the first time I almost shed a tear reading manga. That was so painful. He did not deserve this. Damn.. damn.. damn.

I know this was unfair. He didn't do anything at all but at least it was stated that he was dead where the anime just left it. Poor him

Oh shiet, Touji dies in this version?! Man, totally unexpected, I even had to check what happened to him in anime, because after reading this volume I wasn't sure if I even remembered correctly, geez. Man, the frame with his corpse, where he still has opened eyes... Creepy.

Shinji is now in even more miserable position than he was in the original series. And that last page with cooking Hikari was so sad :(

The fact that Shinji knew who the pilot was beforehand makes this even more impactful
